Cleaning House

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

With Thanksgiving coming last week, we here in Poppyland were definitely starting to worry what our mothers and mothers-in-law will think about our houses. Specifically, I was worrying about whether my house will pass my mother’s test.

Mind you, Mommy Suzanne, as she’s known, is not a white-glove tester. To her credit, she’s never once commented on the dust on my bookshelves. But what does drive her crazy is clutter. And the older I get, the more I agree with her.

And even though I didn’t get anything done in time for the holidays (hey, I had stuffing and granola and cornbread and such to make!), now that Thanksgiving’s over, I’m definitely going to clean.

I had yesterday off. I had dreams of a run, an extra-big cup of coffee, and maybe even a long leisurely breakfast. But before I could get to any of it, I folded some laundry. And that’s when I noticed that maybe it was time for me to clean out my closet–or at least put a few things away some place other than the closet. It was overflowing!

And so, I offer you a few of my favorite space solutions this season. Not only can this Sticks furniture get you organized in time for the next big family event (Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat) but it looks gorgeous, too. Just the thing to distract my Mom from my dusty bookshelves.

Sticks is a group of about fifty or so artisans working in Des Moines, IA (our friend Chris Vance is a supervisor there, by the way –yay, Des Moines! all those talented people!) making custom funky wood furniture …

… including pieces like this beautiful chest, in which I would store my summer clothes or linens. And then there are pieces like this awesome media center (a good place to hide the BF’s embarrassing addiction to sci fi films) …

… and, of course, the perfect place to keep all my jewelry.

Thanks to Sticks, I’m already ready to have the family back. Now if only this furniture could clean the bathtub.
