October is the pinkest month…

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

…in Columbia anyway. Every year for the past several, the fashion design students of Stephens College collaborate with downtown business owners to promote breast cancer awareness. Stores like Poppy provide the window space, and the girls provide all the genius. Each student designs a pink dress using an item she drew from a hat. All month, we get to show off the dress in our windows.

This week, just before their installations come down, I want to showcase the three designers who had the side windows at Poppy.

This first one is by Jenn Young, and is called “Think Before You Drink.” The statistics behind Jenn’s design–which features fabulously pink beverage cans–suggest that too much drinking can have an effect on breast cancer.

This design is by Milena A. Linker, and asserts what we all believe: that it’s time for a cure.

And this last design is by Alice King, and features playing cards and the advice not to gamble with your health and ignore your self-exams or mammograms.

Awesome, aren’t they?

Newness

Hi, everyone! I’m Sarah, and I’m going to be taking over the blog for a little while. Our beloved Liz is getting super-busy these days. She’s training our newest Poppette, Shawna, and shepherding her little boy through his first days of preschool. And all during the busiest time of year at Poppy: late October.

Late October is actually my favorite time of year. Not only are the trees getting red and orange (making me wish I could actually wear my Japanese maple, but we’re also getting box after box of new jewels, baby gear, and art for the Christmas season.

And, as if all that weren’t enough, October is the birth month of our youngest Poppette, Emily. Emily just celebrated her twenty-first birthday (and her first year at Poppy) with a new necklace from Silver Seasons and a delicious carrot cake. Doesn’t it look yummy? Barb and Lili and I snarfed up the last piece right after this photo.

When Emily bought this necklace, she told me, “I pictured myself wearing it every day.” I can see why. This peapod necklace is simple but chic with its neat lines–and the colors are go-with-everything, especially this autumn. Plus, it’s just the thing to go over those turtlenecks we’re all beginning to put on (just picture it over a cream turtle or cowl!). Here’s a close-up.

Silver Seasons is a studio which is devoted to making jewelry based on nature. Each plant is modeled from life and done in hand-painted brass. There’s more great Silver Seasons on our website and in the store. My own current favorites are these acorn earrings. Aren’t they adorable?
